Week 8

Situation:

With the book textures fixed, I let Leo start playing his levels through the book and started experimenting. I got started on the other important part of our project, the cutscenes. As cutscenes would make or break the game, I had got an early start and gotten my devil model and animation. To start out, I decided to make the opening cutscene.

Task:

We needed an opening cutscene.

Action:

I started by getting familiar with the level sequencer. I have a lot of experience with playing with timelines on many video editing software as well as animation so this came pretty easily. I added all my 3d models that I had looked into last week. So I had to start thinking about what I wanted the opening cutscene to look like. I didn't have a lot of environments or time to play with something complicated so imagined Hell to be a rather simple setting. A cold room with almost no light but a burning fireplace and the devil sitting quietly in the corner, watching your every action. I found something very eerie about it.

Unfortunately, the devil 3d model I had was limited so I had to spend some time rigging the body and animating it to stand up. But after I managed to set it up, it worked beautifully. With a booming sound and gigantic body, I felt he would be intimidating. Hope had hinted it to be a bit scary so I was thinking of adding some sort of horror element somewhere. I added a very fitting sound track that is tense and I kept playing around with the ideas until I landed somewhere I felt was solid. I then added an opening sequence that would prompt the cutscene.

Result:

I finished the first of the three cutscenes I had planned to do.

Summary:

The project was going very well. Leo was able to combine his levels with the textures so was quite happy with the results. I started working on the cutscenes as they were big part of the game. We were tittering the line of production so I wanted to ensure we gave cutscenes enough time. We only have about 3 weeks after all.
